Spirit Cabinet for the Gardner Museum Tufted Wall Hanging
A hand-tufted spirit cabinet for Isabella Stewart Gardner. That empty frame held Rembrandt’s “Storm on the Sea of Galilee” until it was stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990. I put her favorite Charles Frederick Worth-designed gown-turned tassel wallpaper (in the Titian room) behind it. I wanted to make a spirit cabinet for Isabella, Rembrandt + Vermeer to sit in to try to contact some art-loving spirits to help get those paintings back. A spirit cabinet is sort of like a phone booth for spirits—you sit in a lil cabinet w curtains closing you in and hope to make contact with spirits.
Tufted area: 33.5"x 34"With satin curtains: 45"x53"
Made with New Zealand wool, small-batch dyed in the U.S., and backed with a cotton/poly blend backing fabric. With satin curtains.
Wall hanging that hangs from a ribbon.
Price includes shipping.
